Comtat d'Empúries (Ampurias). A coastal county from c. 812/813 under Ermenguer; capital Sant Martí, later Castelló d'Empúries. United with Roussillon 817–989, then independent under Hugh I (989/991–1040) and the House of Empúries. Its counts once launched a fleet against the Balearics. Sold to Peter of Ribagorza (an Aragonese royal) in 1325, it was annexed into the Principality of Catalonia / Crown of Aragon in 1402, the title becoming honorific thereafter.
