Using this site

The World Through Time is a free historical atlas operated by Plus Marketing Solutions LLC ("we", "us"). By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it.

Who owns what

The glossary text is free to reuse. The glossary articles and the territory descriptions shown in the map are © Plus Marketing Solutions LLC and licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0). You may copy, adapt and republish them, including commercially, provided that you:

  • credit "The World Through Time" with a link to the page the text came from;
  • say if you changed the text;
  • share alike: release your version under CC BY-SA 4.0 as well; and
  • link to the licence.

Where an entry draws on Wikipedia articles listed among its sources, those passages are also covered by the Wikipedia contributors' CC BY-SA 4.0 licence.

Everything else is ours. The site's code, design, maps as presented here, the selection and arrangement of the atlas, the name and logo, and all other text on the site are © Plus Marketing Solutions LLC, all rights reserved. They are distributed alongside, but separately from, the open-source material described below. Questions: hello@theworldthroughtime.com.

Open-source code and data

German states overlay, 1715–1814. This optional map layer is derived from Historical Basemaps and is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0. Its complete corresponding source — the layer, the upstream files it was made from, the scripts that made it and a list of the changes — can be downloaded from this site: source/german-overlay.zip.

Everything else. Border geometry for the world layer comes from Cliopatria (CC-BY-4.0), and our processed version of it remains available under that licence; coastlines and relief from Natural Earth (public domain); the Mercator view uses Leaflet (BSD-2-Clause); the typeface is Geist (SIL Open Font License). Nothing in these terms limits the rights those licences give you. Full credits are on the sources page.

Accuracy

Historical borders are approximate and frequently disputed, the underlying data samples them at fixed dates rather than continuously, and historians disagree about many dates and details. The written content is researched and drafted with the help of AI and may contain errors. The site is provided for general education and interest. Do not rely on it for legal, territorial, commercial or academic purposes without checking the sources cited on each page.

THE SITE AND ALL CONTENT ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF ACCURACY, MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT PROMISE THAT THE SITE WILL BE AVAILABLE, UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE.

Limitation of liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, PLUS MARKETING SOLUTIONS LLC WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SITE. BECAUSE THE SITE IS FREE, OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATING TO IT IS LIMITED TO US $100.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Wyoming, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Wyoming, and you consent to their jurisdiction.

Changes
