The counts traced their line from Dirk (Theodoric) I in the early 10th century, the county emerging from West Frisia around 880; they expanded at the expense of the Frisians and the bishops of Utrecht. The later Middle Ages were dominated by the Hook and Cod Wars (from c. 1350), civil conflicts between factions of nobility and towns, entangled with the contested succession of Countess Jacqueline (Jacoba) of Bavaria, who was forced to cede power to Philip the Good of Burgundy; he took over the county by 1433. Holland thus became a Burgundian, then Habsburg province — and, a century and a half later, the leading province of the Dutch Republic.
