Origins & foundation

The Sagaing kingdom (classical Pali name Jeyyapura, "Victorious City") was ruled by a junior branch of the Myinsaing dynasty. It began as Pinya's northern province, holding the Mu valley — the largest of the Irrawaddy's three granaries — and the frontier town of Tagaung. Saw Yun, the eldest but slighted son of King Thihathu, walked out of the Pinya palace in 1315, fortified Sagaing's walls in brick (completed 1316) with backing from politically powerful forest-dwelling monks, and fought off two half-hearted expeditions sent by his father. De facto independent from 1315–17, Sagaing formally seceded when Thihathu died in 1325.

Political history & notable rulers

Saw Yun (r. 1315–1327) organised the kingdom for war against the larger Pinya, founding the Sagaing Htaungthin cavalry regiment — a unit that survived in name until the fall of the Burmese monarchy. After his sudden death the throne passed to his half-brother Tarabya I (1327–1336), then into a murky era of usurpation: Tarabya's son Shwetaungtet seized power, and the kingmaker chief minister Nanda Pakyan came to control a string of weak monarchs (Kyaswa, Anawrahta II, Tarabya II, Thihapate) from the mid-1330s to the 1350s, while the dowager queen Saw Hnaung hid Saw Yun's children inside Pinya territory. In the 1350s Princess Soe Min repaired relations with Pinya against the common threat of the Shan state of Maw, sealed by the marriage of Princess Shin Saw Gyi to Pinya's Kyawswa II.

Economy, culture & religion

Landlocked and agrarian, Sagaing possessed the Mu valley's 93,000 hectares of irrigated land at the old Pagan-era peak — but could not exploit it: land lay tax-free in monastic hands and cultivators had migrated south, so that monks reportedly tilled their own fields. Alongside official Theravada Buddhism flourished the forest-dwelling, Ari-influenced sect that had backed Saw Yun's revolt.

Peak & territorial extent

Sagaing claimed territory up to the Manipur border, but effective control was probably no more than half of today's Sagaing Region — the Mu valley and the river corridor to Tagaung, ~99,000 km² at most by the dataset's reckoning.

Decline & end

The Pinya alliance proved hollow: Maw raids in 1356–64 repeatedly overran the countryside, Pinya defected to the Maw side, and in April 1364 Maw forces stormed and sacked Sagaing city. Saw Yun's great-grandson Thado Minbya executed the fugitive king Thihapate, seized the throne, took Pinya in September 1364, and founded Ava in 1365, absorbing both kingdoms.

Legacy & modern connections

Sagaing's historical role was to incubate Ava, the dominant Upper Burmese power of the 14th–16th centuries; a post-1367 attempt to revive the kingdom was crushed by Swa Saw Ke. Today Sagaing is a city and region of Myanmar, its hills dense with Buddhist monasteries.
